I'm not the biggest fan of digital illustration. So much of it, in my opinion, turns out looking the same, no doubt due to the tempting amount of textures and brushes, highlights and shadings tools like Procreate offer the illustrator. These often create illustrations that look immensely polished, and yet, somehow lifeless. I try to swim against temptation by using those brushes that most resemble real-life pencils, charcoal and pastels, and combining them with actual scraps from my growing collection of stamped and painted papers. Preparing the papers gives me the satisfaction of working with actual materials, with linoleum printing and stamping techniques. Seeing them blossom in unexpected ways on the screen makes me giddy with joy.

A little about myself...Hello there and thank you for visiting my website! I am an artist as well as a teacher with a Ph.D. in Spanish Literature and a Master's in TESOL. I studied art at the University of Texas at Austin, MassArt, and the Seattle Art Academy, and have shown my work in countless venues around the United States, among them at the Vashon Center for the Arts, the Waldron Gallery and the SOFA Gallery in Bloomington, Indiana, and my art is in private collections in the US, the Netherlands, France, Germany and Spain. As you can see elsewhere on this website, I have published several books for children, among them El Loro Tico Tango and El Fandango de Lola, a 2012 Ezra Jack Keats Honor Book. ArchivesCategories |
